AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) acclaimed as the web technology of the year 2005 has been around since quite a while, but it is just recently that it has come in to the limelight. Developers have been using XMLHTTP object (the base of Ajax based applications) since its inception, but with the boom of Web 2.0, Rich Ajax based applications have taken the catch, with thousands of applications & website leveraging the potential of this technology.
I have had my hands on several AJAX based applications, but I still consider Gmail topping the state of the art. Microsoft is trying hard in its Windows Live Mail (hotmail's new version) & Live.com based services... but still is not able to match the technical supremacy of Google when it comes to the web.
